Monday is Bike to Work Day - register now to win

On Monday, May 28 Join the Mohawk College Sustainability Office and Smart Commute Hamilton for this year’s Annual Bike to Work Day.

Mohawk to host Special Olympics event for secondary schools on May 30

Mohawk College will host the Special Olympics Ontario and Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board Special Olympics event for secondary schools on Wednesday May 30, 2012.

The games start at 9:30 a.m. at the Fennell Campus and will run until1:30 p.m. 

Mohawk also welcomes the Hamilton Police Service who will be holding its annual Law Enforcement Torch Run/Walk immediately prior to the start of the Special Olympics event. The walk/run will start at Chedoke Twin Pad (91 Chedmac Drive) at 8 a.m. and end at the Fennell Campus in time for the start of the games.

 

Changes to OSAP for Fall 2012

New process for receiving OSAP funds

New and returning students who are receiving OSAP for the 2012-13 school year no longer need to come to the College to pick up their OSAP loans and grant.

Effective immediately, you will be prompted to print your Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement (MSFAA) with your signature pages upon completing your application for OSAP. Simply print out the MSFAA and take it to a Canada Post Office/Outlet for processing. Make sure to get all required signatures on your signature pages and drop them off at the Square (Fennell Campus) or the Student Services Office at a Mohawk campus near you.

This is the new way for you to receive your OSAP funds.

The Hamilton Spectator has this front-page story about Mohawk's College in Motion team. The team visits high schools in Greater Hamilton, meets with students and answers questions on everything from how to apply to financial assistance and program choices. Mohawk College receives $800,000 from new College-Industry Innovation Fund

Mohawk College is investing $800,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation's new College-Industry Innovation Fund to establish the Mohawk eHealth Development and Innovation Centre (MEDIC) at the Fennell Campus.

Mohawk is one of 17 colleges, cégeps and polytechnics from across Canada to share in $15.3 million in funding in support of applied research projects with more than 300 industry partners.

"Canada's colleges, cégeps and polytechnics play an important role as we forge ahead with Canada's innovation agenda," said Minister of State Gary Goodyear. "Innovation needs to be a central focus - from the research laboratory to the production floor. It is the key to maintaining our country's position as a global economic leader."

"Canadian colleges are lending their expertise to local companies, helping them to compete and grow," said Dr. Gilles G. Patry, CFI President and CEO. "The CFI is ensuring that colleges have in place specialized facilities to support their role as important hubs of economic growth and job creation."

"The Mohawk eHEalth Development and Innovation Centre will help businesses, with a special focus on small and medium enterprises, to launch and commercialize innovative new healthcare IT products and services," said Ted Scott, Mohawk's Chief Innovation Officer. "MEDIC will also serve as a hub for organizations undertaking interconnected healthcare projects. Our centre will house the technology needed to provide clients with a live, working eHealth ecosystem, plus the know-how and industry contacts they'll need to develop and commercialize new eHealth products."

Factory Floor offers affordable work space for entrepreneurs and business professionals

Are you a recent Mohawk grad who could use some affordable office space to help launch your new business? If so, you should check out the Factory Floor, a new co-creation space located at the McMaster Innovation Park on Longwood Road South.

Created by Hamilton's Innovation Factory, the Factory Floor offers users access to a "hot desk" and meeting space that can be reserved on a daily, weekly or occasional basis for a monthly fee  ($60/month part time, $150/month full time). There's also free WiFi, coffee, a copier and other office necessities available to you.  

Interested? The Factory Floor is holding open houses every Wednesday thoughout the month of May. Drop by between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. or come early for a free lunch and learn (registration required). You can also book an individual tour by contacting the Innovation Factory.
