The Brantford Expositor has this story about Bill Jol who is set to graduate from Mohawk's Health, Wellness and Fitness Program. Bill, who has lost more than 100 pounds, manages fundraising runs for companies and organizations. He held the first Brantford Grand Trail Run, with proceeds establishing an entrance scholarship for a student enrolled in Mohawk's Health, Wellness and Fitness program.

The Hamilton Spectator has this story about Mohawk College's Apps for Health 2011 conference and student competition held this past Friday and Saturday in the Mohawk Learning Exchange. More than 70 college and university students from health and technology programs proposed technology solutions to real world health challenges. Apps for Health 2011 was sponsored by Telus and NSERC and hosted by iDeaWORKS.

About 70 college and university students are at Mohawk's Fennell Campus today and tomorrow for Apps for Health 2011. The highlight of the conference will take place tomorrow afternoon as the students compete for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes. Organized into teams, the students will pitch their mobile health (m-health) and electronic health (e-health) solutions to real-world challenges put forward by organizations such as Hamilton Health Sciences, McMaster Children’s Hospital, Sick Kids, Leave the Pack Behind and Canadian Medical Assistance Teams.
Apps for Health 2011 is presented by Mohawk College iDeaWORKS and sponsored by TELUS and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada. iDeaWORKS brings industry and community partners together with Mohawk students, faculty and staff to work on applied research and innovation projects. More than 200 students, faculty and staff are currently working on 27 projects with industry and community partners.
Mohawk College students Garrett Tyler (left), Wayne Orgar, David Fillion, Jory Ohayon and Jason Harris are the winners of the Mohawk Trivia Contest. The five students participated in a contest to come up with questions for the online version of a board game called OutSmart. Top prize winner Garrett took home an iPad 2 for having 311 questions accepted for the game. Other prizes included an iPod touch, a Netbook, Headphones and a USB Flash Drive.
Together the winning students came up with 710 approved questions. In total, Mohawk students came up with more than 1589 questions, of which 936 were approved. OutSmart is the creation of Dave Millard, a graduate of Mohawk's Advertising and Graphic Design program in 1993. The east corridor of C Wing from the President's Office (C115) to the entrances to A and B Wings will be closed starting at 6 p.m. today (Friday, May 27). The corridor will remain closed until Monday morning as crews will be installing new tile flooring over the weekend. During this time the stairs across from C115 will not be accessible. A Wing will still be accessible from the basement level of C Wing.

Mohawk College congratulates Debbie Calarco, Associate Registrar and Michelle Ball, Mohawk's Director Student Engagement and Athletics. Debbie and Michelle are Mohawk's newest graduates from the Bay Area Leadership program. Bay Area Leadership is a year-long program that develops an individual's leadership abilities. The goals of the program are to improve networks in the community, provide opportunities for interaction and exchange of ideas, and enhance leadership participation and commitment in the community. Bay Area Leadership is run by Volunteer Hamilton and supported by the communities of Hamilton and Burlington.

The leading edges of health and technology intersect tomorrow (May 27) at the Apps for Health conference and student competition in the Collaboratory at the Mohawk Learning Exchange at the Fennell Campus. Along with workshops and keynotes from industry experts, college and university students will pitch technology solutions to real world challenges brought forward by leading health care organizations. Apps for Health is hosted by the Mohawk College Applied Research Centre for Health Informatics and sponsored by Telus Health Solutions, NSERC, Mohawk iDeaWORKS and Mohawk College.
