(l-r) Storm Mallinson, Ryker Mercanti, Jarod Nettagog and Randy Silversmith are part of the Project Pathfinder program taking place at Mohawk College this summer.
The first of four groups of Aboriginal students are just finishing up a two-week program at Mohawk College that is aimed at encouraging Aboriginal students to pursue post-secondary studies.
Project Pathfinder is a Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities funded program run by Mohawk's Aboriginal Education and Student Services that invites Aboriginal students to experience college life by staying on campus for two weeks. While here, the students participate in a wide range of activities intended to introduce them to career options in professions such as chemistry, skilled trades and robotics. The students also get to learn the Mohawk language and receive help with job skills such as resume writing.
As part of the program the students have been given HD handycams that they'll use to record their experiences in the program. With the help of a professional documentary crew, the students will use their footage to create a short recruitment video for Mohawk College to use for recruiting Aboriginal students.
The documentary crew is also producing a short documentary highlighting Aboriginal people that have achieved success through post-secondary studies. The film will include interviews with current post-secondary students, recent grads, new professionals and President/CEO level Aboriginals.

A new orchestra for a new generation is taking up residence at Mohawk College this summer for an encore performance.
The National Academy Orchestra of Canada is rehearsing and performing at Mohawk College’s Fennell Campus throughout the summer. Established in 1989, the National Academy Orchestra of Canada gives emerging young professional musicians the opportunity to work alongside principal players, improve their orchestral skills and repertoire, refine their auditioning prowess, learn innovative ways to become entrepreneurial in their profession and make important contacts leading to employment. The orchestra is recognized as a national school and receives funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage and Service Canada’s Career Focus program.
The National Academy Orchestra of Canada began holding rehearsals, seminars, master classes and performances at Mohawk during the summer of 2008. The orchestra will perform nine main stage concerts at the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre at the Fennell Campus as part of the Brott Music Festival, Ontario’s largest orchestral music festival and the only festival with a full-time orchestra-in-residence.
“Our aim is to create a new orchestra for a new generation,” says Artistic Director Boris Brott of the National Academy Orchestra of Canada. “We want to inspire young musicians to play classical music with remarkable energy and make their performances pleasing to both the eye and the ear.”
The partnership with Mohawk follows a great European artistic tradition, says Brott. “It is quite common to combine noted educational establishments with exceptional orchestral communities and performing arts. The McIntyre Performing Arts Centre is a world-class facility with wonderful acoustics. From parking to accessibility, our patrons love attending concerts at Mohawk and have responded enthusiastically to our move there.”
The National Academy Orchestra of Canada and the Brott Music Festival are welcome additions to Mohawk, says Rick Court, Dean of Business, Media and Entertainment. Mohawk is the only college in Ontario to offer a three-year Applied Music program. “The orchestra and the festival bring the community to our college and we look forward to continuing and building on a strong partnership.”
This rendering illustrates how bicycles are stored using vertical racks in the bike shelter.
Mohawk students and staff will soon have a more secure option to store their bicycles on campus.
Starting this fall, a student-led initiative will give cyclists the option to buy a membership to a restricted-access bike shelter located just outside C Wing to the east of the main entrance (south). Similar facilities already exist at several city-owned locations throughout Hamilton.
With room for up to 40 bicycles, the shelter will provide bicycle commuters with a safer way to store their bicycles on campus. Members will receive a key fob that has been specially programmed to access the facility. Once inside the cyclists can either store their bike vertically in one of the hanging racks or on the ground in a traditional bike rack. A simple U-lock will secure both tires and the frame of the bike to the racks. Security cameras will monitor the shelter for added protection.
As an added bonus, members will be given after-hours access to city-owned shelters, some of which are located in the downtown core and at other popular locations such as parks and recreation facilities.
The shelter wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for Mohawk students, says Alan Griffiths, Mohawk's sustainability initiatives coordinator. From the initial research, to the pursuit of funders, Mohawk students have led the process from start to finish. The students were successful in accessing shared funding from the City of Hamilton, Smart Commute Hamilton, and Metrolinx as part of its BikeLinx program.
Stay tuned to the Sustainability Office website for more information, including details on how you can become a member.
