Have your say in building a sustainable Mohawk, come to the Environmental Management Plan workshop next Thursday

Mohawk College's Sustainability Office invites all students and staff of Mohawk College to attend a one day workshop to discuss the College's Environmental Management Plan.

When: October 27 from 8:30am - 12:30pm
Where: On the Go seating area in the C wing cafeteria at Fennell Campus

FREE refreshments will be provided.

The workshop is open to all Mohawk College students and staff, but will be limited to 100 participants. Register early to save your seat. 

 

Fit for Future high school competition mirrors emergency services testing protocols

More than 180 students from Brantford, Ancaster and Hamilton area high schools will be competing in the first-ever Fit for Future competition hosted by Mohawk College's Justice and Wellness Studies programs.

The competition, which takes place next Tuesday, Oct. 25 at the College's Elgin Street Campus in Brantford, will give local high school students interested in careers in emergency services the opportunity to compete in events that mirror emergency services testing protocols. These are the same protocols that Mohawk's Police Foundations; Protection, Security and Investigation, and Health, Wellness and Fitness students are measured against throughout their studies at the college. 

Students will compete in a variety of fitness challenges that include aspects of Police, RCMP, Corrections, Security and Fire Fighting fitness testing. The challenges will draw on speed and agility, aerobic endurance, physical strength and mental focus. 

A grand prize trophy will be awarded to the school team that accumulates the most points based on timed finishes.  The top male and female competitors will also be  give awards at a ceremony & BBQ that will follow the competition. 

The event runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the campus gymnasium.

Newcomers welcomed at Mohawk College citizenship ceremony

Thirty new Canadians were sworn in at a special ceremony held in the McIntyre Theatre at Mohawk College today. The event was part of Citizenship Week, an annual event held the third week of October that raises awareness of the value of Canadian citizenship.

Citizenship Week is an opportunity for all Canadians to celebrate the values that make Canada great. Last year, Citizenship and Immigration Canada held 1,723 swearing-in ceremonies across Canada, and welcomed 143,545 newcomers.

Today's ceremony at the College was the last step in a journey that involved years of transition, and in some cases, extreme hardship.

Mohawk hosts two citienship ceremonies a year and was the first college in the province to become a chapter of the Institute of Canadian Citizenship. The Institute is a national, non-profit organization dedicated to engaging Canadians about citizenship. It was founded and is co-chaired by the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson (a former Governor General of Canada) and John Ralston Saul.

In the news: Climate charter to change Hamilton

The Hamilton Spectator has this story about Ontario's first Climate Change Action Charter that was created by a coalition of environmental groups, businesses, and public sector institutions including Mohawk College and McMaster Universtiy. Signing the voluntary charter means organizations and individuals acknowledge the need for action on climate change and commit to taking steps to address it, including establishing baseline measurements, setting targets to reduce emissions and reporting progress annually. Mohawk's Senior Vice President, Corporate Services, Bob Carrington attended the unveiling of the charter at an event held at Liuna Station this morning.

Mohawk College hosts citizenship ceremony this Wednesday

Citizenship and Immigration Canada, the Institute for Canadian Citizenship and Mohawk College are getting ready to welcome 30 new Canadians during a special community celebration on Oct. 19 from noon to 1 p.m. at the McIntyre Performing Arts Centre in the Fennell Campus. A roundtable discussion with new Canadians will be held before the ceremony with a reception to follow at 1 p.m. Students, faculty, staff and the general public are invited to the noon hour ceremony, which is being held in conjunction with national Citizenship Week. Mohawk hosts two swearing-in ceremonies every year and was the second college in Canada to become a member of the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.

In the news: LERN magazine recognizes Mohawk College's CE Catalogue

Digital Journal has this story about Mohawk College's Continuing Education calendar being recognized for the second consecutive term in Learning Resources Network (LERN) Magazine. Mohawk's calendar was recognized for being the first in the field to use QR (quick response) codes. LERN is the leading periodical on continuing education, with more than 1,100 organizational members.

Mohawk College hosting end of day celebration for Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay

Mohawk College will host the end of day celebration when the Rick Hansen 25th Anniversary Relay arrives in Greater Hamilton on Nov. 12. The relay recreates the Canadian portion of Rick Hansen's Man in Motion World Tour. More than 7,000 walking, wheeling and running participants in 600 communities will help raise awareness of the potential of people with disabilities. Among the medal bearers for the Hamilton leg of the relay will be Mohawk alumni Frank Peter (a 1999 Mohawk Alumni of Distinction recipient) and Anthony Frisina. The relay will arrive in Hamilton from Burlington at 3 p.m., stop at McMaster University's Centre for Spinal Cord Injury and Cancer Education and then have an end of day celebration at Mohawk at 5:30 p.m. The cross-Canada relay began Aug. 24th in Cape Spear, NFL.

iDeaWORKS at Mohawk College hosts Entrepreneurship Speakers' Series, first event Tuesday

iDeaWORKS at Mohawk College launches its free Entrepreneurship Speaker Series in partnership with Blair and Kathy McKeil. Richard Padulo, President of Immersion Media, will speak on Classic Market Tactics in Modern Messaging Mediums on Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. in C116 at the Fennell Campus.

Blair, Chairman and CEO of McKeil Marine, is also serving as Mohawk's first ever Entrepreneur-in-Residence. Blair is available to mentor and provide practical advice to students on entrepreneurial ideas, business plans, strategies and pitches. Blair will be at the Fennell Campus in room i208 from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Oct. 31, Nov. 14, Nov. 28 and Dec. 12. Students are welcome to drop in or book an appointment.
